One of the most important investments a business owner can make is insurance.  Insurance is not glamorous, but if you don’t have it, it is too late should your have losses due to unforeseen or unfortunate circumstances.  If you have any doubt just check the latest news broadcast.  Some business is being blown away by a tornado or flooded by an unexpected storm.  The goal of commercial insurance is to protect a business, so that it can remain in business if or when something unexpected occurs.

Commercial insurance can provide valuable protection against such things as:
Theft
Property damage
Liability
Business interruption
Employee injuries

Without insurance a business is at risk of losing money and property.  Even the owner’s personal money and property may be at risk, too.

Depending on your particular business, there may be some types of commercial insurance you don’t need.  For example, you may need commercial property insurance, but not commercial auto insurance.  But, it is important to learn about the different types of insurance that may be relevant to your business.  Also, consider that your insurance needs will change over time, as your business grows and prospers.

Most businesses are able to obtain commercial insurance with ease.  However, it may be difficult if there is a history of large losses.  Plus, certain industries carry greater risk due to the nature of operations or the history of the industry as a whole.  Your business may be considered high risk if it is fairly new or has operations that make frequent insurance claims more likely.  Think of oil spills and the like.  Such instances may come with higher costs or non-conventional avenues are required to obtain coverage.

Start with a reliable agent with a well-known insurance company.  This agent should do some simple fact finding so as to fully understand your specific needs and characteristics.  Also, expect that your agent will work with you to tailor coverage to your specific requirements so that you have the insurance coverage you need and no more.
